يشكّل هذا الجزء من الرواية تلخيصاً كاملاً لها. فالإنسان ذلك المجهول، كما سمّاه أحد المفكرين، أو القرد العاري، كما سمّاه آخر، يحمل في أعماقه كل المتناقضات، وكل الصراعات، وهو الذي فرض نفسه سيداً على الأرض بالرغم من ذلك. هذا الإنسان أشبه حقيقة ببحيرة متسعة الأرجاء، تعتقد فيها كل الهدوء والجمال حين تنظر إلى سطحها في يوم رق نسيمه وصفت شمسه، ولكنه يحوي في أعماقه كل ما يمكن أن يُتصور وما لا يمكن، حين تتجاوز السطح إلى الأعماق. في داخل هذا الإنسان يكمن الخير والشر، والقوة والضعف، الرحمة والقسوة. يتسامى حتى يكاد يصل إلى مرتبة الملائكة، ويتدنى حتى يكاد يصل إلى مرتبة الشياطين، ولكنه في النهاية يبقى إنساناً، لا هذا ولا ذاك. ما هي الظروف التي تجعل من الإنسان هذا أو ذاك؟ هذا هو السؤال الذي ما زال مفتوحاً لكل إجابة. فرغم أن الإنسان حقق الكثير في محاولته السيطرة على محيطه المادي، إلاّ أنه لا زال لغزاً هو بذاته، ولا يزال مجهولاً بالنسبة لنفسه. وإن كان قد أجاب على كثير من الأسئلة في هذا المجال، إلاّ أن الأسئلة لا زالت كثيرة، والأجوبة لا زالت عديدة، والخافي أعظم. قرون عديدة تفصلنا عن “سقراط”، ولكن سؤاله الأزلي لا زال يرن في الأذن: اعرف نفسك.
